Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka's oldest beach resorts and has a coral reef protected as the Hikkaduwa Marine National Park. Snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips show reef fish, and green turtles are often seen close to shore. There are surf breaks at the north end of the beach, and a busy strip of restaurants, shops and bars. Nearby you can visit a memorial and museum to the 2004 tsunami, which hit this stretch of coast. It is a good stop on a south-west coast route.
