Minneriya National Park surrounds the Minneriya Tank, a reservoir built in the 3rd century AD. In the dry months, when water elsewhere dries up, many elephants gather on the exposed grassy shoreline, which is known as The Gathering and can involve more than a hundred animals at one time. The nearby Kaudulla National Park offers a similar experience, and the elephants move between the two depending on water levels. Both parks are close to Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, so they fit easily into a Cultural Triangle trip.
