Negombo is the most convenient beach town for arrivals and departures, since it is close to Bandaranaike International Airport. It has a long beach, a busy fishing harbour, and a lagoon where traditional outrigger boats are still used. In town you can see the Dutch-era fort and canal, old Catholic churches, including St. Mary's, and the early-morning fish market. The Muthurajawela wetland is close for a boat trip through the mangroves and birdlife. It is a good place to rest on the first or last night of a trip.
