Weligama sits on a broad, sandy bay with gentle, rolling waves, which makes it one of the best places in Sri Lanka to learn to surf. Surf schools line the beach, and the nearby coast around Ahangama and Midigama has many cafes, yoga studios and boutique stays. Along this stretch you can also see traditional stilt fishing, which is now partly a tourist photo spot. The town is a short drive from Mirissa and Galle, so it fits easily into a south coast trip.
