Wilpattu National Park, on the north-west coast, is the largest national park in Sri Lanka. Its landscape is dotted with natural, sand-rimmed lakes called villus, surrounded by dry-zone forest. The park is known for leopards and sloth bears, and also has elephants, spotted deer, sambar, crocodiles and many birds. It was closed for years during the civil war and reopened to visitors in the 2000s, and it is still much quieter than Yala. Jeep safaris start at the Hunuwilagama entrance.
