Discover a different side of Sri Lanka on a seven-day private east coast journey. Travel from the airport to the Cultural Triangle before continuing to Trincomalee and Nilaveli, where sandy beaches and clear-water excursions await in suitable weather. Explore the historic sights of Trincomalee, enjoy optional boat trips and snorkelling near Pigeon Island, and continue south to Passikudah for a relaxed beach stay. An overnight stop near Dambulla breaks up the longer airport transfers. This tour is especially attractive during the east coast's generally drier months, although sea conditions and excursion availability vary.
ℹ️ This itinerary is designed around the east coast rather than a complete island tour. The airport-to-Dambulla transfer and the return journey from Dambulla can each take approximately 4 to 5.5 hours or longer. Passikudah to Dambulla is also a substantial drive. The Dambulla sightseeing option on Day 2 should be chosen according to your arrival time and the planned departure for Trincomalee. Pigeon Island excursions are optional and must only proceed when conditions and park operations permit.

Day 1: Airport to Dambulla
Meet your private driver at Bandaranaike International Airport and travel towards Dambulla through Sri Lanka's interior. Depending on your arrival time, stop for refreshments along the way and check in at your accommodation. If you arrive early and have sufficient time, you can arrange a visit to Dambulla Cave Temple, subject to opening hours and the time needed for the drive. Otherwise, enjoy a relaxed evening and begin sightseeing the next day.

Day 2: Dambulla to Trincomalee and Nilaveli
After breakfast, continue east towards Trincomalee. If Dambulla Cave Temple was not visited on Day 1, a morning visit may be possible if you depart early. Continue to Trincomalee and, depending on arrival time, explore the Fort Frederick area or visit Koneswaram Temple. Then travel to Nilaveli and settle into your beach accommodation. Do not attempt every sightseeing option if the transfer or temple visit takes longer than expected.

Day 3: Discover Trincomalee
Explore Trincomalee at a relaxed pace. Visit Koneswaram Temple if you did not visit it on Day 2, and explore the historic surroundings of Fort Frederick. Depending on local conditions and opening hours, you may also visit a suitable viewpoint or spend time at a nearby beach. Return to your accommodation in Nilaveli or Trincomalee for a relaxed evening.

Day 4: Nilaveli Beach and Optional Pigeon Island Excursion
Enjoy a beach day around Nilaveli. If the sea is calm and excursions are operating, arrange an optional boat trip to Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling and marine scenery. Entry, boat transport and equipment may involve separate fees. Follow local park guidance and use an authorised operator. If the sea is rough or the excursion is unavailable, spend the day relaxing at the beach or exploring nearby coastal areas instead.

Day 5: Trincomalee to Passikudah
After breakfast, travel south along the east coast towards Passikudah. Enjoy the changing coastal scenery and stop for refreshments along the way. Arrive at Passikudah and spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach if weather and sea conditions are suitable. The rest of the day is deliberately kept light so you can enjoy the coast without rushing.

Day 6: Passikudah to Dambulla
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and some beach time before travelling inland towards Dambulla. If you leave early and the timing works, you may arrange a short stop in Batticaloa, but this should be confirmed with your driver rather than assumed. Continue to Dambulla and check in for your final night before the airport transfer. Keeping this day focused on the drive avoids arriving at the airport area too late the following day.

Day 7: Dambulla to the Airport
After breakfast, travel from Dambulla to Bandaranaike International Airport. Allow sufficient time for traffic, rest stops and airport check-in. Additional sightseeing is not recommended unless your flight is late and the schedule has been checked carefully. For an early flight, consider changing the final overnight stay to a location closer to the airport.
